Activation FAQ
Quick answers to the questions we hear most often. Can’t find yours? Get in touch.
Ask a questionWhat is the difference between a product key and a digital license?
A product key is a 25-character code you enter manually. A digital license is stored on Microsoft’s servers, tied to your hardware or Microsoft account, and activates Windows automatically once you are online.
What happens if I don’t activate Windows?
Windows keeps working, but a watermark appears on the desktop and personalization options such as wallpaper, colors and themes are locked. Using an unactivated copy is not compliant with the license terms.
Will I lose activation after reinstalling Windows?
No, as long as you install the same edition on the same PC. Your digital license is restored automatically once you connect to the internet.
I replaced my motherboard. What now?
Link your license to a Microsoft account beforehand. After the swap, run the Activation troubleshooter and choose "I changed hardware on this device recently".
Can I transfer my license to another PC?
Retail licenses can be moved after you remove them from the old PC. OEM licenses that come preinstalled by the manufacturer are usually tied to the original device.
How do I check activation status from the command line?
Open Command Prompt and run slmgr /xpr to see the status. For detailed information, run slmgr /dlv.
Still can’t activate Windows?
Open the error library, find your code and follow the step-by-step fix.
